Abstract

This study aims to examine the theological meaning of the Shema Israel in Deuteronomy 6:4 through an exegetical approach, and to examine its implications for the formation of Christian faith identity in the contemporary era characterized by pluralism, secularism, and moral relativism. This text is understood as the center of Israel's confession of faith that affirms the oneness of God while demanding a total response in the form of love and obedience to Him. This study uses a qualitative method with a biblical hermeneutic approach through literature study, by integrating historical-contextual, grammatical-lexical, structural, and theological analysis of the text, especially on key terms such as shema' and echad. Data sources include the Bible text as primary data and various theological literature as secondary data. The results of the study indicate that the Shema Israel is not only a statement of monotheism conceptually, but also contains a demand for complete and continuous obedience; lexically and theologically, the term echad affirms the exclusive and unmatched oneness of God in the context of polemics against polytheism, while emphasizing the importance of generational transmission of faith through the family as the center of faith education. Thus, the formation of a Christian faith identity does not occur instantly, but rather through a process of internalizing the word, renewing thought patterns, and consistent life practices in relation to God, so that the Shema Israel continues to have normative relevance in building an authentic, holistic, and contextual faith identity amidst the dynamics of today's life.
