Abstrak

In the context of higher education in Indonesia, religious tolerance plays a vital role in shaping a generation capable of living harmoniously amid religious, cultural, and social diversity. However, the dynamics of implementing tolerance in religious colleges, particularly in the Central Indonesian region, still require further attention. This study aims to explore perceptions and practices of religious tolerance in Hindu, Islamic, and Christian-based campuses, as well as to understand the challenges faced in applying tolerance in these environments.The research employed a qualitative method with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) approach and interpretative phenomenological analysis to delve into students' perspectives and the role of the campus in fostering tolerance attitudes. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, enabling representation from the three major religions in the region. The findings indicate that Christian and Hindu campuses are more actively integrating tolerance through interfaith curricula, seminars, and interfaith dialogues, while Islamic campuses have fewer interfaith programs, limiting interreligious understanding in these settings. While interfaith education in higher education significantly contributes to fostering religious tolerance, we still need to address challenges like prejudice and interreligious misunderstanding, particularly in predominantly homogenous campus environments. Higher education institutions are encouraged to strengthen interfaith programs through inclusive education and diversity seminars, as well as to foster student participation in interfaith dialogue to enhance interreligious harmony within the academic environment.
