Abstract

This research discusses one of the traditional music of the Abui tribe, Alor district, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. As we know, culture in Indonesia is very unique and diverse and is considered a multi-ethnic country. Various regional peculiarities, including music, dance and traditions, have become the identity of the archipelago, so that research and search for matters related to culture are very important for all of its people. In this study, researchers seek to reveal the things or values behind gong and moko as traditional music and objects of prehistoric times which are still being passed down from generation to generation until today. In this study, researchers used qualitative methods to collect data as best they could according to the steps as they were. Various theories and literature studies are also used as a reference in this research so that this research also has an academic basis. Ethnomusicology and semiotics are strong theories in research because this research specifically discusses the functions, values and meanings contained in the gong and moko musical instruments for the indigenous people of the Abui tribe, Alor district. Gong and Moko have a very important role in the life of the Abui people because of the various functions they have and that is also what makes many people keep trying to collect them until now.
