Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of flashcards implementation in improving the ability to read staff notation of students participating in extracurricular choir activities at Citra Bangsa Mandiri Christian Elementary School. The background of this study is based on the low ability of students in recognizing and reading music notation, which impacts the practice process and the quality of singing in the choir. This study uses a quantitative approach with a pre-test and post-test design, involving 17 students from various grade levels. Flashcards are used as visual aids that display music notation symbols in an attractive and easy-to-understand manner, thus facilitating students in the music learning process. The results of the study show a significant increase in students' ability to read music notation after the implementation of flashcards. This is demonstrated by the increase in average scores from the pre-test to the post-test, as well as an overall increase in total scores. Although some students experienced a decrease in scores, overall, flashcards proved effective in helping students better understand music notation. In addition to improving cognitive aspects, the use of flashcards also increased student motivation, concentration, and engagement during the learning process. Therefore, flashcards can be recommended as an innovative and effective alternative music learning medium, particularly in the context of extracurricular choir activities at the elementary school level.
